What Does a Saved Layout Remember?
A saved layout on the Calls list, the Customers list or the Scheduler remembers how you arranged the screen, not where you were in it. This page lists what each screen's layouts keep, what they leave out on purpose, and what you see when a layout cannot be brought back exactly. You save and pick layouts from the Layouts control at the top of the filter rail.
What does a Calls list layout remember?
A layout on the Calls list remembers everything that decides which calls you see and how they are laid out:
- Which calls (all, to schedule, or scheduled) and which date the window is on (Logged or Due).
- The date window, saved as the word you chose, so "This week" in a layout always means the current week when you open it. A range you picked from the calendar stays on the dates you picked.
- The filter rail's ticks in the Call Type, Call Status, Action Status and Engineer lists, the picked customer and the invoice-to customer.
- Every column filter. A date filter on a column other than Logged or Due, such as Started or Ended, keeps the dates it had when you applied it, even if you chose a word such as "This month".
- The columns: which are shown, their order and their widths; the sort; the grouping; and the number of rows per page.
- Whether the map is showing.
A Calls layout never saves a search typed in Search calls; picking a layout keeps whatever search you have on.
What does a Customers list or Scheduler layout remember?
A layout on the Customers list remembers Which accounts, the picked customer, the rail's Group, Category and Account manager ticks and every other column filter, and the columns, sort, grouping and rows per page. A date filter on Opened or Last edited keeps the dates it had when you applied it. The Customers list has no map, so its layouts carry none.
A layout on the Scheduler remembers the view (Day, Work week, Week or Month), the rail's ticks and picked customer, Which engineers, the Scheduler settings (the working day, the cell size, Colour by, where appointments are placed and the automatic refresh), whether the map is showing, and whether the To schedule column is open along with its own filters. It never saves a date. When the Scheduler opens afresh it starts on today's window; picking a layout while the board is already open keeps the dates you are looking at, so a layout picked while you plan next week re-arranges next week. Press Today on the Scheduler to go back to today's window.
What does a layout leave out?
A layout leaves out anything that is a moment rather than an arrangement:
- the page you were on, and the row or appointment you had marked;
- where the map was looking;
- how wide you dragged the filter rail or the map, and whether the rail is folded away — these belong to the computer you are using.
Your colours are not part of any layout either: a colour belongs to the item, such as a call type, and is the same on every screen and in every layout.
Which layout does a screen open on?
When you open the Calls list, the Customers list or the Scheduler, ABM Service decides what to show in this order:
- Coming back with Back returns you to exactly where you were, including the layout you were on.
- Otherwise, the layout with the star (★) in the Layouts control.
- When the star is on Last Used Layout (as it is to begin with), the screen as you last left it.
- If there is nothing to go back to, the screen as it comes out of the box.
The Layouts control also remembers, on each computer, which layout you were on, so after walking to another screen and back, or reloading, it still shows that layout's name, its dot (•) and its save button. In the ABM Service desktop app it remembers the name only while the app is running. After the app is exited, restarted or updated, a screen whose star is on a saved layout or on Default Layout still opens on that layout under its own name; when the star is on Last Used Layout, the screen comes back as you left it but the control says Last Used Layout.
Are my layouts available on other computers?
Yes. Saved layouts, the star and Last Used Layout are kept with your ABM sign-in in your company's ABM Service, so they are there on any computer, in the browser or the ABM Service desktop app, once you sign in. Nobody else can see or use them; there is no way in this version to share a layout with a colleague or set one for everybody.
Each screen has its own layouts: a layout saved on the Scheduler appears only on the Scheduler, and one saved on the Calls list only on the Calls list.
ABM Service reads a screen's layouts the first time you open that screen. A layout you save on another computer, or in another browser tab or desktop app window, appears in the Layouts control here the next time ABM Service is opened, once you reload the page in a web browser, or as soon as you save, rename, delete or star a layout on this screen yourself, because ABM Service then finds the newer set and makes your change to it. If the Layouts control shows none of your saved layouts, they could not be read when the screen opened; they are not lost, and they come back when you reload the page or open ABM Service again.
Why did a layout come back without some of its settings?
When you pick a saved layout, ABM Service brings back everything it can and puts the rest back to the screen's normal setting. A setting the screen has gained since the layout was saved simply takes its normal value, with no message, because the layout never held a choice for it. A filter or rail selection the layout did save but that can no longer be read is different: ABM Service names it in the filter rail, for example that the layout "was saved before this screen had everything it has now. We could not restore the Engineer panel." Columns are the exception: if a column the layout showed is no longer in the list, for example an extra column your company has since removed, that column is left out without a message, and so is any sorting or grouping by it. Update the layout to save it again as it now stands.
If a layout was saved by a newer version of ABM Service than the one you are using (for example on a computer that has not yet taken an update), it is not opened, and the screen says the layout "was saved by a newer version of this application and cannot be opened here." Once the ABM Service you are using is up to date, pick the layout again.
